Motorcycle Upgrade routes through UK licensing are structured in tiers rather than a single test, which trips up a lot of riders trying to work out which category actually applies to them.
A1 covers light motorcycles up to 125cc and is available from age 17. A2 steps up to machines producing up to 35kW (47bhp) and is aimed at riders aged 19 to 23 progressing beyond A1. Full Category A — unrestricted access to any bike regardless of power — requires either being 24 or older, or having held an A2 licence for at least two years first. Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) sits underneath all of these as the prerequisite most riders need before any road riding on a provisional basis.
Getting the sequencing wrong is the most common issue: applying for the wrong category for your age and experience, or missing that a mandatory module test needs booking before DVLA will add the upgrade to your licence. Each stage has its own DVSA module tests and its own paperwork, and a mismatch between what you’ve actually completed and what you’re applying for is one of the most common reasons an upgrade gets held up.
