C1 covers vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, the category most often needed for larger vans, ambulances, and small lorries. Both sit above standard category B, and both come with a higher medical bar than an ordinary car licence.

That medical standard is where most delays happen. Unlike a standard licence renewal, C1 and D1 applications require a more thorough medical declaration, and DVLA will query anything that looks incomplete or inconsistent with your GP or medical examiner’s report — which can add weeks to an otherwise straightforward application.
