HGV Bus Upgrade licensing covers three distinct professional categories, and knowing which one actually applies to the job you want is the first thing to get right before any paperwork goes near DVLA.

Category C covers the standard heavy goods vehicle licence for rigid trucks over 3,500kg. Category C1 sits a tier below, for smaller commercial vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg — ambulances and delivery trucks typically fall here. Category D covers passenger-carrying vehicles: buses and coaches. Each requires its own DVSA theory and practical tests on top of your existing car licence.

Beyond the driving test itself, commercial categories require a D4 medical assessment carried out by an approved medical examiner, and — for most professional roles — the initial Driver CPC qualification alongside your licence category. These aren’t optional extras; DVLA won’t process a commercial upgrade without the medical sign-off, and most employers won’t put you on the road without the CPC in place.
