What age can you drive in the UK? The honest answer is that it depends on the vehicle. A teenager can ride a moped at 16, most people can start driving a car at 17, and larger motorcycles, lorries and buses all come with higher minimum ages. There are also a few exceptions for people who receive certain disability benefits.

This guide puts every common minimum age in one place, explains when you can apply for a provisional licence (earlier than most people think), and covers the rules that apply while you are learning. We are an independent information site and not DVLA. The age limits below follow the official GOV.UK guidance, which you should check before you book anything.

What age can you drive a car in the UK?

Most people can start driving a car when they are 17. You cannot legally drive on a public road before then, even with an instructor, unless you qualify for the exception below. At 17 you can drive a car as long as you hold a provisional licence, display L plates and are supervised by someone aged 21 or over who has held a full licence for at least three years.

Once you pass your test you can drive unsupervised, and you must hold an insurance policy that covers you for that.

If you receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), you can start driving a car at 16. The same applies to people on the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance or the equivalent Scottish benefits.

What age can you apply for a provisional licence?

You can apply for your first provisional licence from 15 years and 9 months old. That does not mean you can drive yet, but it lets you get the paperwork in order so you can book lessons on the day you turn 17. The online application costs £34, and it is £43 by post. Our provisional licence application guide explains the documents you need, and our driving licence fees breakdown lists every other service price.

When you apply, you must also be able to read a number plate from 20 metres and have permission to live in Great Britain for at least 185 days. Our page on driving eyesight rules covers the standard in detail.

What age can you drive a moped or motorbike?

Two-wheeled vehicles start earlier and then follow a stepped system:

VehicleTypical minimum ageLicence category
Moped (up to 50cc, 28mph)16AM
Light motorcycle (up to 125cc)17A1
Standard motorcycle (up to 35kW)19A2
Unrestricted motorcycle24 directly, or 21 after two years on A2A

You must complete Compulsory Basic Training before riding a moped or motorcycle on the road on a provisional licence. Our guide to the A2 motorcycle licence explains how the step-up system works in practice.

What age can you drive a lorry or minibus?

Larger vehicles require a higher age and, almost always, additional training. A medium-sized vehicle (category C1, 3.5 to 7.5 tonnes) can be driven from 18. Full-size lorries and buses have higher age limits, and you will usually need the Driver CPC qualification as well. Our guides to HGV licence categories and Driver CPC explain the requirements for professional driving. Because the rules vary by category and by whether you are working, check GOV.UK before you commit to training.

What age can you drive a tractor or other vehicles?

You can drive an agricultural tractor from 16 with the right entitlement on your licence. Other special vehicles, such as quad bikes and trikes, have their own limits. If the vehicle you want to drive does not appear here, the “Vehicles you can drive” tool on GOV.UK lets you check by age and licence type.

What age can you drive abroad or on a foreign licence?

If you are visiting Great Britain on a foreign licence, you can usually drive a car from 18. If you are a new resident, you have to swap or follow the rules for your country. Our guide to driving licence rules for new UK residents explains the process. When you drive abroad, the minimum age and car-hire age can be different again, and many hire firms will not rent to under-21s without surcharges.

What age can you drive with a learner licence?

Learner drivers can start lessons at 17, or 16 with the PIP enhanced mobility exception. You should follow the same safety rules whatever your age:

If you are anxious about the test, our guide to driving test nerves has practical tips.

Costs to think about once you know what age you can drive

Knowing what age you can drive is only the first step. Budget for the whole journey: the provisional licence fee, the theory test, lessons, any private practice insurance and the practical test. Young drivers face some of the highest insurance premiums in the country, so compare quotes from several providers, consider a telematics (“black box”) policy and think about adding a named experienced driver only if it is genuine, because misrepresenting who drives the car can invalidate a policy.

Passing the Pass Plus course can sometimes help with premiums, and a smaller, lower-group car is usually cheaper to insure. Finally, keep the licence itself in good order: tell DVLA if you move house, and avoid penalty points in your first two years, because the New Drivers Act can take your licence away at six points. Our guide to penalty points and the New Drivers Act explains how.

What age can you stop driving?

There is no upper age limit. Your licence expires on your 70th birthday, and from then on you must renew it every three years. Our guide to renewing your driving licence at 70 explains how that works, and it is free. If a medical condition develops, you must tell DVLA at any age.

Planning ahead: a timeline for young drivers

  1. 15 years 9 months: apply for a provisional licence.
  2. 16: eligible for moped training, or to learn to drive a car if you receive PIP enhanced mobility.
  3. 17: start car lessons and book your theory test, which costs £23.
  4. After passing theory: book your practical test, which costs £62 on weekdays and £75 at other times.
  5. After passing: your full licence arrives automatically from DVLA.
